SECTION 1  ENGLISH PROVERBS WITH VERBS IN THE FUTURE

INDEFINITE TENSE

1. Pay attention to the use of the Future Indefinite Tense in the following proverbs and sayings. Give their Russian/Ukrainian equivalents.

1. Take care of the pence and the pounds will take care of themselves. 2. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. 3. Don't make yourself a mouth or the cat will eat you. 4. Do as most men do, then most men will speak well of you. 5. (He) who keeps company with the wolf will learn to howl. 6. A straw will show which way the wind blows. 7. The fire which warms us at a distance will burn us when near. 8. The fish will soon be caught that nibbles at every bait. 9. What is bred in the bone will never come out of the flesh. 10. He who chatters to you will chatter of you. 11. Give knaves an inch and they will take a yard. 12. Give a thief enough rope and he'll hang himself. 13. Claw me and I'll claw you. 14. He will never set the Thames on fire.  15 Roll my log and I will roll yours. 16. Stretch your hand (arm) no further than your sleeve will reach. 17. Much will have more. 18. Nature will have its course. 19. Set a beggar on horseback and he'll ride to the devil. 20. In the end things will mend. 21. An old dog will learn no new tricks. 22. Grasp the nettle and it won't sting you. 23. Passion will master you, if you don't master your passion. 24. Throw nature out of the door, it will come back again through the window. 25. Where the water is shallow no vessel will ride. 26. He that will steal a pin, will steal a pound. 27. If one believes that, one will believe anything.

 

2. Give English equivalents of the following proverbs and sayings with the Future Indefinite Tense form of the verb  predicate. Use (2) as a key.

1. Гони природу в дверь, она войдет в окно. 2. Смелость — залог успеха. 3. Если не поборешь страсть, будешь ее рабом. 4. Кто украдет иголку, украдет и кошелку. 5. Одна овца перепрыгнет через канаву, а за ней все. 6. Он звезд с неба не хватает. (Он пороху не выдумает). 7. Копейка рубль бережет. (Береги пенсы — целы будут и фунты). 8. По одежке протягивай ножки. 9. Дай ему палец, он и всю руку отхватит. 10. Посади свинью за стол, она и ноги на стол. 11. Деньги к деньгам. 12. Перемелется — мука будет. (В конце концов все уладится). 13. Природа свое возьмет. 14. По мелководью и утка не поплывет. (Где мелкая вода, никакое судно не пройдет). 15. Из ничего ничего не выйдет.

 

3. Express the idea of the following by using suitable proverbs and sayings with the Future Indefinite Tense form of the verb predicate Consult the reference list below.

1. A person in extreme difficulties will try every possible means to escape, even though he knows it is unlikely to be successful. 2. You help me or do something in my favour and I'll help you in return. 3. Small events can be a guide to momentous happenings. 4. If you mix with evil companions you will soon be as wicked as they are. 5. Concentrate on saving small amounts and in time you will have a large amount. 6. We inherit certain characteristics from our ancestors, and those same characteristics will be inherited from us by our descendants. 7. If you grant some people a small favour, it only encourages them to take more than they are offered. 8. Whoever tells you tales about other people will tell other people tales about you. 9. When a man without money grows suddenly rich, he is liable to become the most arrogant of mortals. 10. If you give a bad person enough opportunities he will bring about his own downfall. 11. If one yields partly to a person's demands or desires, he will take advantage of this by making even greater demands.

SECTION 2  ENGLISH PROVERBS WITH VERBS IN THE CONTINIOUS AND PERFECT TENSES

1. Memorize the following proverbs and sayings paying attention to the use of the Continuous Tenses. Give their Russian/Ukrainian equivalents.

1. Know where one is going. 2. One's left hand does not know what one's right hand is doing. 3. Don't cut the bough you are standing on. 4. He that has a long (great) nose thinks everybody is speaking of it. 5. The tortoise wins the race while the hare is sleeping. 6 Fiddle while Rome is burning. 7. Fools (every fool) will be meddling.

 

2. Give English equivalents of the following proverbs and sayings, concentrating on the use of the Continuous Tenses. Use (1) as a key

1. Черепаха выигрывает бег, пока заяц спит.  2. Не руби сук, на котором сидишь. 3. Левая рука не знает, что делает правая. 4. Пир во время чумы (развлекаться во время народного бедствия). 5. Дураки любят во все вмешиваться. 6. Знать, чего хочешь (быть себе на уме). 7. На воре шапка горит (тот, у кого большой нос, думает, что все говорят только об этом).

 

3. Comment on the use of the Present Perfect Tense in the following proverbs and sayings. Memorize them. Give their Russian/Ukrainian equivalents.

1. It is too late to lock the stable (door) after/when the horse has bolted. 2. When children stand quiet they have done something ill. 3. Don't sell the bear's skin before you have caught the bear. 4. Every oak has been an acorn. 5. Drink as you have brewed. 6. The cow knows not what her tail is worth until she has lost it. 7. Bacchus has drowned more men than Neptune. (Wine has drowned more men than the sea). 8. The mountain has brought forth a mouse. 9. A thief passes for a gentleman when stealing has made him rich. 10. He knows best what good is that has endured evil. (Who has never tasted bitter knows not what is sweet). 11. One has made one's bed and one must lie on it. 12. A lot of/much water has run under the bridge. (There have been many a peck of salt eaten since). 13. We know not what is good until we have lost it.

 

4. Give English equivalents of the following proverbs and sayings. Take care to use the Present Perfect Tense where necessary.

1. Сам заварил кашу, сам и расхлебывай. 2. Если дети притихли, значит, они набедокурили. 3. Гора родила мышь. 4. Не убив медведя, шкуры не продавай. 5. Поздно запирать конюшню после того, как лошадь украли. (Задним умом крепок). 6 Много воды утекло с чех пор. 7 Вор сойдет за джентльмена, когда становится богатым. 8. Большое вырастает из малого. (Каждый дуб был когда-то желудем). 9. Не отведав горького, не узнаешь и сладкого. 10. Вино погубило больше людей, чем море. 11. Что имеем—не храним, потерявши—плачем. 12. Как постелешь, так и поспишь.
